My research examines how management accounting and control systems shape behavior in organizations. Specifically, I study incentives and performance information, including what these instruments signal to employees. More recent projects deal with algorithmic decision tools and digital monitoring in management control as well as with the internal reporting of misconduct. To identify causal effects, I mainly run field experiments inside firms, often using data from their management accounting and personnel systems, and complement them with laboratory and online experiments and with survey and archival data. Much of this work concerns employee attendance and sickness absence, a topic of ongoing public policy debate.
